What is the Keto Diet and How Can It Help You Lost Weight?

At Aloha Wellness in North Central San Antonio, TX, we help our patients find a happy and healthy lifestyle with nutrition education. You may have heard of the keto diet before, but may not be sure what it entails. Our nutritionist can answer your questions regarding this diet and how it can help you lose weight.

What Is the Keto Diet?

Many people make a false assumption that the keto diet is a high protein diet only, but actually, it's a diet that is higher in fats. Conversely, it also suggests that only five to ten percent of your total calories should come from a carbohydrate source. Adjusting to a diet with such restrictions on carbohydrates means a lot of lifestyle changes. The primary purpose of the diet is to put the body into a state of ketosis, which burns fat instead of the typical fuel source (carbohydrates).

Breaking Down A Keto Diet Meal Plan

Here is a list of the percentages and examples of the types of foods one would consume on the keto diet:

  • 70 to 80% of total calories from fats: animal fats, olive oils, avocados, coconut oils, nuts, and seeds
  • 10 to 20% of total calories from protein: beef, chicken, turkey, eggs, full-fat yogurt, and cottage cheese
  • 5 to 10% of total calories from carbohydrates: green veggies, non-starchy veggies, small amounts of fruit

How Can the Keto Diet Help Me Lose Weight?

The keto diet has been found to have positive effects on weight loss. Although fat has more calories per gram than carbohydrates, the diet works because you are nearly eliminating carbohydrates. Starting a diet such as this one should be monitored by our nutritionist to ensure that you aren't putting yourself at risk.
